Three Toed Box Turtle

Elegant head colorations mark this box turtle, which derives its full name from the number of toes on its back feet. I photographed this one in early spring as it visited a watering hole along a forest edge. They will also move to grassy areas depending on the humidity level at which they are most comfortable. Their diets include vegetation, low-growing fruit, insects, worms, mushrooms, slugs, snails and even bird’s eggs when they can find them.
