Frozen in Flight

A young, immature male hummingbird caught in mid-flight. This one is feeding in late summer, adding the layer of fat it will rely on for energy during its long migration flight to southern locales. Hummers have to bulk up enough to make it a couple thousand miles without a rest stop in between as they fly over the Gulf of Mexico. Most likely, this youngster will sport the familiar ruby throat feathers upon its return the the U.S. next spring.
