If you’ve read East of Peculiar, you know that the art of kulning plays an important role. I had never heard of this technique for calling cattle, but stumbled upon it during a YouTube search for something entirely different, a topic I cannot even recall. I was about halfway through writing East of Peculiar at that time and was completely entranced by what I heard. I knew I had to incorporate it into the novel somehow, which also led to the creation of two new characters.
